    Malignant hyperthermia is a rare clinical syndrome characterized by a dramatic hypermetabolic state (tachycardia, tachypnea, muscle spasms, and later hyperpyrexia) triggered by anesthesia, usually involving halogenated inhalational agents and succinylcholine; mutations have been identified in genes encoding calcium channels.
